The Paperwork Process

I thought I would put some notes up about the process of getting your RV registered and inspected. Eveyone seems to agree this is one of the more difficult tasks to accomplish. I kinda find that hard to believe but we'll see.

Homebuilder's Top 10: What aircraft registration mistakes do builders make?

With 4 months to go until completion...

Step 1) Call or email Van's and ask them to send you a bill of sale. If you are putting your wife's name on the registration, it also needs to be included on the Bill of Sale, on a seperate line.

Step 2) Call your local FSDO and ask for an "Amature Built Application Package". Don't take no for an answer. Form 8050-1 is a 3-part form so you can't download it from the internet. The package should contain the following items:

  • FAA Form 8130-6, Application for Airworthiness
  • FAA Form 8610-2, Application for Airman Certificate
  • FAA Form 8050-1, Aircraft Registration Application
  • FAA Form 8130-12, Eligibility Statement
  • FAA Form 8050-2, Aircraft Bill of Sale (We don't need, Van's will provide.)
  • AC 20-139, Commercial Assistance
  • AC 20-27F, Certification of Amateur Built A/C
  • AC 65-23A, Certification of Repairman
  • AC 21-12B, Application for Airworthiness Certficate
  • AC 39-7C, Airworthiness Directives
  • AC 43-9C, Maintenance Records
  • AC 90-89A, Flight Testing Amateur Built A/C
  • AC 8050-88, Indentification Number Assignment
  • Special Airworthiness Certificate request
60-120 Days prior to submitting for Aircraft Certification

Step 3) Submit your AC Form 8050-1 along with the Kit Bill of Sale, Affidavit of Ownership for Amateur-Built Aircraft and a Special Request letter if you want a specific N number.
